The Red Cross in Action Responding to Help Those Affected by Disasters and Emergencies Right Here in Utah
By Susan Thomas
27 year old Doug Locklair smelled smoke, saw fire, woke up his roommates and ran out of the house he was renting in the middle of the night. He found himself lucky to be alive, wearing nothing but a pair of boxers. He said, “The Red Cross people seemed to come out of nowhere. They were like angels. They helped me with clothing, food and offered to help me with a place to spend the night. I don’t know what I would have done without them.” Locklair has very poor vision and his contacts burned in the fire. The Red Cross helped him get new contacts that day. Last year, the Red Cross in Utah responded to 114 disasters and helped 619 people like Doug.
